Victory Hall Performance - Aaron Healey
Last night's show at Victory Hall was probably the finest display of collaborative craftsmanship I've seen in YEARS! (And thats a lot of years, believe me.)
Frank, well, he hit the nail on the head with every syllable and phrase it was scary. I had never heard the first couple of "tunes" before so that was particularly fresh for me. He dropped a figurative "bomb" on us with his newly revised poem, "Resolutions". That was a highlight for me. David is truly one of the fantastic gifts that the almighty has granted us in this god forsaken world. He really brought Frank's work to life, especially with the piano numbers. The French Horn call-and-response to N'Orleans Town was very nice. And capping off the show with "Pull My Daisy" sent us all through the roof with cheers. Thanks to them both. See you next time. PS: nice website! Aaron.

I heard Amram mention on the radio he was doing an album with Frank, that's really cool. I remember watching the original movie, The Manchurian Candidate with my dad many years ago. I'm looking forward to seeing him live...with Frank. Should be sweet. David has to be close to 75 or 80 years old, right? He looks MUCH younger. OK, Beats are us! PS: Hey Bfree, how is Creek central? It's been a while since I saw those guys. I remember the days at the Agora Ballroom when I was in college.

Unity and healing, hmmm, that's a concept to ponder...they say that the spoken word only represents 35 percent of human communication, and so many fail to comprehend proxemics, tactilics, and oculesics..I'm a pretty good read..However,one cannot 'get' a joke in cyberspace, unless it's explicitly stated .A wolf in sheeps clothing, some humor eh?

Phil Kramer - frank m.
HI all. I'm very sad to say that Phil Kramer passed away today after suffering a stroke on Thursday. Some of you may know Phil from the many, many shows he attended. I had the pleasure of knowing Phil and sharing the stage with him for early renditions of Octopoet. He jammed a mean guitar and was often seen sitting in with bands galore at Wetlands and many other NY haunts. In short, he was a fixture on the live jam band circuit. He was instrumental in launching the site, Sugarmegs.com, a site dedicated to live music recordings. I last saw Phil doing what he does best...playing guitar at the XR Bar on Houston Street, smiling, enjoying "the moment" he lived for. Please send your good vibes to him today. He will be missed. Thanks.

re: pa music - bfree
Thanks Michael, that was great stuff,I love the genre bending/blending,it's like cultural jazz...welp,I do hope that some of this material will get a reissue somehow...I have some vinyl, out of print 60s stuff, and I have already experienced the frustration of trying to track down rarities. Thanks for the label and cat numbers, that helps alot!..it was nice chatting with you before the show, give a shout out when that nasty-hip-57 varieties-website of yours comes out, that sounded like fun!!...thanks for responding to my post.Peace....btw,interesting choice with the water drumming for the Octopet show,I have some similar material from Elipsis records,(the Big Bang),not well circulated. That sample was perfect for bringing out the elemental as the touchstone for that piece.Nice....Peace out.

music from before the show - Mike C.
Michael C. here, the DJ from Octapoet - I'd like to respond to a request for the music playing before the show. that was a sampling from a great, defunct record label out of the UK called em:t. It's all out of print and pretty hard to get in original issue (some of those 12" records go for $75 now!), but here, to the best of my recollection, are some of the songs:

Saguaro by A Small, Good Thing (em:t 2000)

Borders by Bad Data (em:t 2000)

Blood by Voodoo Warriors of Love (em:t 2000)

Woobed by Woob (em:t 4495)

Your Chair by Slim (em:t 0097)

Rain In Our Room by Undark (em:t 3396)

that's about all I can remember. I'm glad people liked the effects and soundscapes; believe me when I say I've been working closely with frank, and things are going to get even better.

OCTO REVIEW - Peabody
OCTOPOET REVIEW, 10/2/04, Bowery Poetry Club, NYC, Line-up: Frank Messina - spoken word; Brian Jackson - piano; Mark Egan - bass; Scott Murawski - guitar; Larry McDonald - percussion; Lee Baronian - percussion; Victor Jones - drums; Elliott Levin - flute, sax; Chanda Rule - b/u vocals; Dawn Lorentz - b/u vocals; DJ Mike Callaghan - sequencing.
special guests Mike Gordon, bass; Sudan Baronian, percussion.

Unlike past Octopoet shows, this one began without a formal introduction. Instead, the lights dimmed to a candle-lit stage. The crowd quieted. Sounds began to rumble through the venue from DJ Mike Callaghan's earth scapes; thunder, rain and birds. Reminiscent of Pink Floyd's Animals album, the mood was set from the get-go. As the lights slowly illumintated, revealing Mark Egan, looking like a Celtic demon, fingering sounds from his bass that went beautifully over the earth scapes. The rest of the band took the stage and Frank Messina began a poem entitled "Hurricane Season", a political piece...clearly juxtaposing the recent hurricane season with the current political climate. Brilliant indeed. The band then broke into a very funky "Riviera Lounge Woman", with Scott Murawski locking in a tight groove. The back up vocalists gelled beautifully with Frank's refrain, "woman of the riviera lounge..slinks her way home". Very sexy piece. Frank broke out an a-capella favorite "Psycho Chick" to some great laughter. Then, things began to get very deep, in a pleasant way. "N'Orleans Town" began with Brian Jackson's fingerwork on piano...taking us to Bourbon Street and through the swamps of Louisiana. The classic Bayou beat surprisingly gave way to a jazz beat...with Mark Egan making it look as easy as pie. Egan did a solo that sent chills down my spine...dropping "bombs" then returning to his classic fretless "jaco pastorious style" sound. And it was no wonder he received the ovation he did after the solo. At that moment, you knew you were among some of the greats that the music world has to offer. After Frank gave some heartwarming introductions of the band, Frank busted out a righteous piece, "From the Throat of America", a new piece that put a lump in your throat and then forced you to swallow it. A very poignant piece that confronts the horrors of war and world complacency; "...complacent nations tie my arms, so instead I sob with you..." Powerful piece. Victor Jones donned a solo on drums that grew more intense as Frank continued the poem. The first set finished with Frank's signature piece, "I Want to Hear Poetry", giving room for Elliott Levin and Scott Murawski to roll up their sleeves for some high energy sax and guitar dueling. Very cool. Overall, one of the best Octopoet sets thus far. But then there was still the second set.

Set II

Sudan Baronian (tambourine) and Mike Gordon (bass) sat in for two pieces.

The second set was twice as long as set I and was journey into itself. Without a tape of the show, I am relying on pure memory and some basic notes I took in the form of a setlist and minor notes about each piece. It must be fair to say that I don't remember every piece that was played. I will concentrate on the hightlights of this second set. The addition of DJ Mike Callaghan allowed for some special soundscape moments. Like the first set, the second began with rolling thunder and slow drones...layered by Egan's gorgeous bass licks. The rest of the band assembled for a riveting sonic space jam...with b/u vocalist Dawn Lorentz leaning on some haunting melodies to create the mood. Victor Jones busted into an uptempo disco beat (stones' emotional rescue meets stevie wonder) for the Rhythm Vacuum. I've seen Frank bust this piece out with Max Creek some years ago and it still is one of my favorites. Pure celebration of live music. There were some nice vocalizations between Frank and b/u vocalists Dawn and Chanda. I can remember the piece dissolving into a cosmic meltdown; I thought the wheels were about to spin off the "train", but then the piece returned to its steady heartbeat pace. This was a very special opener indeed. Frank did "Passion" a capella. Frank brought on Sudan Baronian, (father of percussionist Lee Baronian). Sudan began tapping the tambourine in a traditional middle eastern method, knocking sounds out of the instrument that I've never heard before. This guy is, without question, a master at his craft. Lee Baronian followed his father into an odd timed beat followed by Mark Egan right behind him. Frank busted out "You Will Not break Me" with force and righteousness. This piece has been absent in frank's recent repetoire and it was a delight to see it return. Larry McDonald dug deep into his drums for Jamaican riffs that cooked the piece along...beautiful. Scott Murawski performed a solo in his classic Max Creek style...leaning on chords, bending notes and the appropriate harmonic now and then. Frank put his book down at this point and began improvised lyrics, relying on the spontaneous muse. He cleverly blended the lyrics of the piece with mentions of "hope" and "healing". After a lengthy cooking jam, Frank reprised the Rhythm Vaccuum and gently laid the piece down to Sudan Baronian's tap, tap, tap of the mighty tambourine. This piece was truly a highlight and drew some great cheer amongst the audience. Frank introduced Phish bassist Mike Gordon to the stage, which drew some gasps from the table in front of me. Mike treated us with a heavy bass groove to Frank's "Disorderly Conduct". This was pure heaven. Scott Murawski and Brian Jackson began trading off notes as the piece gelled together. Sax man Elliott Levin, a human bellows pump, shot sounds from his horn that only God knows how he did it. Mike Gordon snuck in some bass bombs in response to Frank's refrain, "You have the right..." with the girls chorusing..."you, you, you...got the right". This is a very catchy piece and it should remain, in my opinion, a staple of the Octopoet repetoire. Followed by several solo poems, Frank broke out a very poignant rendition of "Bicyle". The set cooked along with a new piece, "Resolutions", then a montage of shorter works; "Dance", "Life Wife" and "Americans at Sunrise". (not sure about correct titles). The show sizzled to the very end with bluesy "From the Throat of America", a Bouncy "Song for the Poet". "En Route to Ecstacy" was a tight encore, sending Frank and Elliott into the audience, wireless mics and all. A spectacular way to end the show. The big question is...when will this happen again?

..at one point,a couple folks stretched their legs just after Bicycle..the love impact of the poem on the crowd was as intense and touching as the poem itself........Look Me in the Eyes and You Will Not Break Me were just...righteous....loved the percussion and bass, they stretched the heartstrings in preparation for sincerity...the stereo of the flute/sax and guitar were like sparks of ignition for perception and cognition...and the drummer beat like hope above desire....yes,I definitely am waiting for more of the same and beyond.

Octopoet - Peabody
Its definitely a beautiful thing; the concept of Octopoet. I was wondering if frank would include the 9/11 poems in his repertoire last night or not. Its obviously important material and I was glad to hear it. But, the message, as a whole, during the show, was "celebration". Very positive. I wish I could've taped the show. Tomorrow when I have some energy, I may write a review for the show and post it at the creek forum. OK, Time to walk the dogs.

yes,Mike C's samples were just such a mood setter...I really enjoyed the vocals for N'Orleans Town(sweet keys as well!),Riviera Lounge Woman,Lead Me Not Into Temptation, and Song for the Poet..Bicycle left me silent; to be able to address such a sober and sad event with such respect and mad love is a testament to the quality level of communication that poetry and music combined can have...hearing Fortune Cookie was an unexpected treat, being able to hear Franks' nuance of meaning gave it something beyond the written word, that was nice...yep...this could go on...hehehe.

I agree Bfree, that was an unbelievable show! I thought I was in a Hithcock movie at one point when the thunder effects were piped in during the first set. Also, that was very classy of Mark Egan to turn his bass over to Mike Gordon for a piece. What a TREAT! I hope an album of this show surfaces soon. There were so many highlights, its hard to pin down. Maybe in a few days after refreshing my batteries. I just wish you could bottle the experience and open it up anytime you need to. PS: driving back home, watching the sun rise over Philly was very cool. Very fulfilling.

One highlight, when playing the Rhythm Vaccuum, you seemed to eliminate the rhythm, like it was being torn apart and broken down, and then there it was again, that was sweet!..everyone was on the same page, that was just mind blowing.Alright, enough cheesy fan talk.Take care.

Egan - On The Mark...
No, that was Mark White, from the Spin Doctors. Mark Egan is equally famous, but mostly among jazz circles. His most notable ensembles have been with Pat Methany, Pat Martino, Gil Evans. He also recorded with Sting. He's also about five shades lighter than Mark White. LOL.

Octopoet - Peabody
Octopoet Show Review: 3/12/04, Bowery Poetry Club, New York City. Frank put together an impressive line-up of musicians for this show. They included Brian Jackson on piano, Larry McDonald and Lee Baronian on percussion, Victor Jones on drums, Scott Murawski on guitar, Michael Callaghan on dj, Don Martin on bass, Elliott Levin on sax and three female back up vocalists Dawn Lorentz, Chanda Rules and Laurie Berman. I hope I got all the names spelled correctly. Just mentioning these names is not enough, for their status in musicology speaks volumes. If you're not familiar with any of them, just do a search and you'll see names such as "miles davis, freddie hubbard, dizzy gillespie and jaco pastorius" associated with these cats. Octopoet opened up with a high energy version of Frank's staple piece, "I Wanna Hear Poetry", which featured very sexy back/up harmonies by the singers and some tasty guitar leads from the versatile Max Creek guitarist Scott Murawski. Frank's recitation was superb. This was clearly a show in his "backyard" and he appeared relaxed and very happy to be on stage with this line-up. Secondly, he graced us with an a-capella piece, "Psycho Chick", which struck roars of laughter from the packed house. It's a poem about a date from hell! We all can relate to that! From that point, Octopoet took us on a ride to New Orleans, San Francisco and the far east with rich numbers such as N'Orleans Town, Rhythm Vaccuum and Lead Me Not into Temptation. Elliott Levin gently riveted his way to a boisterous sax solo that made the roof shake. Larry McDonald and Lee Baronien both took some decent percussion solos, with the back/up vocalists harmonizing beautifully over Frank's recitations. Scott Murawski got ovations for his solo during Rhythm Vaccuum and rightfully so, for his playing was undoubtedly masterful. There was a lot of respect generated by the musicians on stage, each taking perfect solos and never stepping on each others toes. Frank's signature 9/11 pieces were tastefully snugged between some upbeat pieces. As heartbreaking as the piece "Look into the Eyes" is, it had it's place in the set and reminded us where we are and what's going on in the world. DJ Mike Callaghan rolled in some nice drones and rhythms (ala Beasty Boys) over the tunes. This was a great touch, even though I'm not a fan of electronic music, it defintely was done very well and tastefully. The first set ended with an emphatic and mugasmic medley of poems on a fat, repetitive groove that made me get up and dance for a while. The second set began with a disco beat over the sweet "Run For Cover", this was Murawski's time to let loose. He ripped into one of the best solos I've heard him do outside of Max Creek. Think "shakedown street" meets "thank you (for lettin me by myself)". Really nice piece, the girls were great on this one. The rest of the set was beautifully dynamic, bringings the mood down only for one piece, "Bicycle" which frank teased and rephrased "better days ahead" in sync with the b/u vocalists. That was a treat! The second set segued into 6 tunes I believe, finishing with "Song for the Poet" which Frank has closed shows with often. This was a rare night in New York City with Octopoet! I would like to see this happen again. I left the show feeling positive, upbeat and recharged. Octopoet is definitely the best kept secret in town!

Alan Dugan - Frank Messina
Alan Dugan died last Wednesday near his Cape Cod home of pneumonia. He was 80 years old. While the world lost a great poet, a great mind, I lost a friend and a mentor. I first met Alan Dugan in 1990, when I was honored to be selected for his advanced poetry workshop at Indiana University, Bloomington. We stayed in touch over the years. He became a mentor, a friend. My poetic grandfather and advisor. He wrote the letter that landed me a fellowship from Columbia University. He was the first person to read the manuscript of my book, Disorderly Conduct. And he was the first to follow up and write a blurb for it. The last blurb he would write in his life. Most importantly, he taught me, as a young fledgling poet, how to listen. For that, I am honored.
Although my heart is heavy, I rejoice in knowing that he lived a rich and fulfilling life, and remained prolific even til the end. In poetic circles, he was an American legend, spanning 5 decades of publications, winner of the 1961 Pulitzer Prize and also the 2001 National Book Award. Although he's gone, his work and his legacy will always live on. He will always be with me in spirit. Farewell my friend.

Response to Mr. Peters - Scott Tyrrell
You do not agree with retailing poetry the general public? Poetry was never meant to be an elitist high brow art form, the origins of it stemming from spoken word storytelling - a chance for people to come together to be enlightened, educated and entertained, to know they werent the only one with those feelings. I do not agree with some of Frank's politics, but I respect him greatly as an artist who is injecting some life force and energy back into an artform that has been staid for far too long. Poetry to the people!
Tue May 6 08:07:28 EDT 2003
response - Brendan Peters
Why must we "gotta love that" Mr. Paulie? Actually, I was a bit perturbed after Messina's reading here in Durham. Not regarding his work, because, passionate, he is. But as a progressive, world conscious individual, I was disturbed in how fellow mates snatched up his work like victims of American imperialism they are. Messina's approach as a performer, in effect, epitomises the notion as how the sacred (being poetry) has become another victim of the widespread American imperialism that exists the world over. This message is not meant as a degradation to Frank Messina, but a mere stating of the facts as they are. I have great respect for him, but I do not agree with retailing poetry to the general public. I write this also because I believe you Paulie to be the same one that wrote in respone to De Mays LongShore article I wrote on American Poetry, particulary about Messina and life as a 21st century poet. My best to you.

BOWERY BOWERY BOWERY - Peabody
Well, I'm back in Philly with a thoroughly recharged set of soul batteries. It's been over a year since I've seen FM with Spoken Motion but I've seen them dozens of times since 1994, so I may be biased. But, that had to be one of the top 3 greatest shows they've ever done. It was nice to see Elliott back in the mix after doing some new spoke-tunes. By the way, many raves to the Disorderly Conduct piece. Great way to open the show, that bass line is killer! I have longed to see frank break out a keyboardist again ever since that cat joined them at the Wetlands several years back, sorry if I can't remember his name. I spoke briefly with Larry McDonald during the set break and asked if the keyboardist was a permanent thing. He just smiled and said, "permanance is a very strong word." Haha, gotta love him. Knowing how much of a fan Frank is of the b-3 sound, (we spoke a couple of times about Melvin Seals, Brent Mydland and Eddie Harris), I hope it is permanent. It adds a lot of soul. Nice touch. It was a beautiful night and it really meant a lot to me to be there in NYC and catch SpoMo once again. Please, please, please come to Philadelphia soon. OK, I have to get back to work, coffee and all.

Messina/Americans at the Voltaire - Jerrol
Well, if Frank did not vanish so promptly after last night's performance, I would have bought him a pint at Black Bows for an afterparty. There is a war in your heart Messina, and it was befitting as such to have packed the Voltaire beside the ruins of the great fire of Edinburgh of last December. What words do you have for our fallen venues, 500 years and now destroyed? There is a war in your heart Messina and you did not let me in last night to help sort it out. Til we meet again American poet. PS: the book has dog eared itself already thanks to my fidgety hands.

Nice clip from MTV's "Looking Back" special that covered spoken word history in pop culture. Sure enough there was lo and behold a very good clip of poet Messina at LollaPalooza and a chats backstage with he and Allen Ginsberg at some venue in Boulder Colorado? Nice to say the least. PS: John Depp reading Jack Kerouacs was pretty funny. Please Johnny, pass the book over to Messina and let him do the honors. lol.

Yes, Worlk for Peace - Frank Messina
Thanks for the kind words CreekFreek. Sharing the glorious stage with Max Creek is always an honor and also a whole lot of fun. Regarding working for peace, yes, we all must work diligently for peace by helping those around the world. Remember, tyranny and oppression are the true enemies and the sooner those rogue leaders do the right thing and step down, the sooner we can achieve world peace. Let's hope it can be done without a war. Work for peace.

Work For Peace 2003 - CreekFreek
Hi Frank. Just found your site. I was introduced to your work at the Webster Theater on New Years Eve. Luckily i have a copy of the show to listen to it as i wish. I really dig your performance that night. Your words & the music blend together so well. Thank you for a new experience.

PS, I should of said hi to you after your performance. You came into the crowd and hung out right in front of me, but i was being shy i guess. So, Hi! And keep workin' for peace.

April, the cruelest month - Peabody
April is National Poetry Month and that's why wordman needs to be in the States that month. I was afraid he'd venture off to Siberia or something. I'm all fuzzy to see a 10th Ann show posted at the Bowery Poetry Club, but why dear wordman, does it have to be when I'm due to be in San Diego with the wife and in-laws?!?? Argh. OK, time for a coffee break, this job I got is a little too hard. PS: Linda, call me if you want to burn the digi tapes soon.

GD/Messina/Kelly's - Doc Briandis
Just have to say what a special treat to see poet man at Kelly's last night with Vince Welnick. The last I saw him on keys was on stage at Giants Stadium with the Grateful Dead. I'm amazed at the headliners they get at Kelly's Pub, a couple of weeks ago Melvin, then this. Who's next, Elvis? LOL. Anyhow, nice to see that level of colaberation last night. The band was clearly into the spoken word slot and Welnick had a good ole grin during "Psycho Girl" poem. He was great on the B-3, I only wish he used it with the Dead just like Brent did. OK, time for beddie buy. A full day work in the office tomorrow.

webbie theatre... - DT
What a nice treat to see the poet on New Year's in the big room with Creek. I don't know if anyone else caught it, but just as frank said the phrase, "look into the eyes of 2003 lives", there was a halo of purple lights around his part of the stage. Maybe I was feeling too good or something. lol. I have to get the vid from that night. I'll have to ask Pickleboy for it. What a great time! Happy New Year and thanks for the positive message Frank...

Thank You All - Frank Messina
Now it's my turn to give a big thanks to all of you too. I banned myself form writing here two years ago but I would like to say a few words. I had a remarkable year as a whole, in part because of you. It's been a year filled with introspection, healing and perseverance. It's also been the most productive year in my life. It's been a challenging year faced with adversity, adulation, joy, sorrow. I am deeply grateful to my friends and family...and fans. I received beautiful letters and emails from all types of people regarding my 9/11 poems and 'Disorderly Conduct'. I have a collection of letters from firefighters, volunteers, orphaned children of 9/11 and just plain ole people that were touched by something I wrote. I will try and post some of them here at spokeface.com soon. As a writer, that's very gratifying because the only reason to write is to communicate. I should also note that I received more hate mail this year then you can imagine, but that comes with the terror'tory of the life of a poet. People will disagree with you and your words. Some will even try to harm you. It's just how it is. I have said it before and I'll say it again: I love my country, the United States of America. I do, however, hate what we do sometimes. Thankfully, there is room in our constitution for all people to voice their concerns. In America, we have the Bill of Rights, which is the only document in the entire world that guarantees human rights for all people here and abroad. I ask all of you to go back and read the US Constitution and the Bill of Rights, then remember how lucky Americans are to have these ideals etched not only on paper, but in our hearts. For me, 9/11/01 had a profound effect on my life, for a variety of reasons. But, working side by side, volunteering via the Ground Zero triage, with people of all races and religions, affirmed my belief that solidarity, unity are the most important components of a diverse society such as here in the US. I will not let that feeling fade into the history books. I will never forget what it feels like to be "one" as a people. I encourage everyone to take a stand on what you believe in, as long as it's for the good of all people and not meant to injure. Work for peace, but never let anyone imtimidate you or push you around. Stand by your beliefs. And most of all, do something with yourself. Create, teach, do something that will positively effect someone else. I hope I can do that in my life time. Well, everyone have a happy and healthy Christmas, Hanakah, Kwaanza, Ramadan, Pushtanta, Chupachia and a very happy New Year. Feliz Navidad, Buon Natale, Buon'Anno, Salute`. Be good. But if you can't be good, then at least be good at it.

South Dakota 1996 - Gina Lee Saulle
My party left NJ and arrived on an earlier flight. Frank flew to the Wounded Knee Creek Lakota Reservation alone. The event was titled, "The Wounded Knee Creek Concert To Mend The Sacred Hoop", held on the site of the actual battle - Frank was the only performer recruited from this area - plucked out from a smoke filled Casablanca coffe house type of bar hangout, hip, timewarped
kind of place and literally dropped in the middle of the South Dakota desert.
I'd say that's close to time traveling.

We set up camp behind the stage eventually grouping together for day 1 of this supposed 5 day event. We were happily mingling when a serious storm kicked the stage around and digested some tents...There was excitement over the awes of nature, being very, very
cold, sleeping in a barn seriously circa 1976 horror flick...BUT IT WAS ALL
WORTH IT.

Frank eventually performed, taking stage with a group of musicians
that melded together just fine, with "WOW" best describing the whole
visual we had from the audience point of view - the star freckled night sky was the backdrop, with an endless awesome ceiling. Everyone was hypnotized...didn't matter if you were performing, watching, or sitting across a pic-nic table gazing at someone while socks hung to dry over head that Chuck Berry just cleaned his guitar with...You were hipnotized. Thanks for the memories old friend...I hope your life is always filled with great joys and creative fulfillment -
Gina Lee Saulle

The Rain of My Sill - robert b. (duke of groning)
ah, you missed quite a favourly sight dear scott. there were no apologies, just elegance and cheer. but of course rumours of edinburgh's aflame blamed in part by his proclaiming, "to Mary, queen of Scots, take over England once and for all..." and the riots insued. how does the new york poet go from Lord Mayor of Newcastle's chamber to the Royal Mile of Scotland overnight? ah the American I both admire and despise with equal halves of my heart. I shall drink one more pint tonight in his honour. tell Keith Armstrong he drinks too much/he drinks too much.

NEWCASTLE - colourblue (art leiton)
ah the good deed i do for the new york poet; last nights illustrious performance was a highnote for geordies near and far. messina came through like a charm with his verse. here's a clip hot off todays press: "new york poet frank messina returned to newcastle's bridge hotel for a night of jazz infused poetry last night. the often-times controversal yet popular american poet read selections from his new book 'disorderly conduct', earmarked as a powerful example of modern poetics. he highlighted the evening with the help of local jazz elders 'safe sex octet'. appearing a bit more haggard than last year's post 9-11 performances in the bridge hotel but energetic, messina ranged his content from a tribute to ella fitzgerald to ground zero heroics. perhaps most poignant were his works devoted to the orphaned children of the 9/11 terrorist attacks...to finish off a vibrant second set, the octet bounced into a lively rendition of charles mingus's jelly roll blues with messina reading his signature poem which repeated the phrase, "i want to hear poetry!". northern england critics have referred to frank messina as a new york cult poet, but he seemed more akin to an old friend coming over for some holiday broon. most left the bridge hotel smiling and with a new cd or book under arm. messina's uk visit brings him to the edinburgh castle for a performance at 19:30 in edinburgh, scotland tonight and the scottish poetry library at 12:00 saturday." Wetlands Memories - Peabody
Ah the Wetlands! I can still smell the place now...LOL. I have to add my 3 cents here. I remember one of the big jams there, after the Bob Weir shows in 1999? Rob Wasserman stayed another night and played with Melvin Sparks, Fuzzy from DBB, Aaron Comess and I think the Allman Brothers bassist showed up too. Frank came on during a phat jam and blew us away with his "Lady Day" poem. I have that tape somewhere. I have to find it now that I'm reminded. By the way, Messina should do another album...Octopoet style. That's just my opinion of course I'm a bias boogie woogie man myself. OK, the boss is back and I have to get back to work. Peace.

Live Live Live! - Peabody and Munchee
speaking of live shows, so far the best combo frank uses is the spoken motion crew, as far as dynamics and originality. But, the Octopoet jams are fondly remembered. Those Nuyo gigs a few years back still rank on my top 20 live tape list, and that includes JGB and Creek tapes. I still remember Cecil Taylor in the audience licking his chops, puffing those nasty clove cigs while frank and the back up vocalists did an awesome ode to Ella Fitzgerald. And who can forget the "New York City/Sunday Afternoon" rant frank belted out with Brian Jackson on piano. Ahh, the joy of technology, I will cherish those tapes. So, I guess this is my indirect way of requesting an Octo showz sometime soon. Ok happy folks, be nice to each other. PS: frank, say high to Ace for me.

Over by the wildwood, hot summer night. we lay in the tall grass, til the morning light come shining through. If I had it my way I'd never get the urge to roam. But a young man serves his country, and an old man stays at home. Don't put me in a frame upon the mantle. For memories grow dusty old and gray. Don't leave me alone in the twilight. The twilight is the loneliest time of the day. Never gave a second thought, No. What's right, what's that, I'm not the judging kind. Don't send me no distant salutations, nor silly souvenirs from far away. Don't leave me alone in the twilight, the twilight's the loneliest time of the day.

Salving the Wounds of 9/11? - Hector-FDNY
This is what some pinhead wrote in the paper of Bruce Springsteen's latest attempt to be hip and salvage his spent career. This dolt in the paper sugar-coats Bruce's "compassion" and how he personally called two victims wives. Where was he 9/12? In the comfort of his cushy compound I'm sure.
Frank (like thousands of others) made that leap of faith just to get over the river to come help with getting things stowed after this mugging that NYC sustained while "Douche" Springsteen found a new soapbox to peddle his latest concoction of snakeoil. How dare he mix this brew from the blood of the innocent of 9/11.
I (and my brothers) remember 41 Shots. Bad move Bruce you don't dis the NYPD like that and get away with it. Everyday we put on the uniform we put it on the line to save the likes of his sorry ass, selflessly. Frank Messina's words come from experience and brotherhood. He has Looked into the Eyes of the beast and the sorrow it's caused. As for Bruce why don't you Rise Up and crawl back under the rock you've shamelessly slithered from.
God Bless the NYPD, FD and EMS. Glad to see you'll be around for the Fall, RANT ON!

Disorderly Conduct Live! - Angelique
Figured I'd come and visit your site. I recieved a CD of 6 tracks from your performance at Kelly's Pub. I'm part of a performance troupe which encompasses dance, music and spoken word in a chronicaling fashion. A fellow thesp' passed this along to me and WOW! I also got to see a video of the title track "Disorderly Conduct" in an e-mail! VERY COOL! We here in "Hot Lanta" (actually Congers, GA) were really touched with your sentiment, any chance of you coming to Atlanta? We have lots of New Yorkers here (5 in our troupe)and know you'd be a hit with our audiences. We even did a dance improv with "Rhythm Vacuum" and "Woman with a Hankerchief" at rehearsal last week, who knows it might make it's way into a future performance. Great message, great music even the CD cover, all very timely. We love it. Much sucess with your book and tour!

Look into the Eyes - Seamus
Powerful stuff. Saw a video clip of one of Messina's performances from a friend of mine from NYC. As a displaced New Yorker here in the Bay area this' a heartfelt recount of the deep sorrow, anger and indignance experienced by all Americans for the horror that happened on 9/11. Went to this sight to find more audio/video and found none. I see that you're touring the book "Disorderly Conduct" hope you'll make it to the West coast for this is for all Americans, young and old, North, South, East and West. Bravo!

I think our messina was happy to be back in New York, but being so close to ground zero, this reading had a tad of a somber note to it. Nonetheless, it rocked. Frank told me that the new poem is untitled but he dedicated it to Stephen McHue, a firefighter who grew up in his neighborhood and died 9/11. I'll be in Kentucky next week reporting from the front. By the way, did anyone see that beautiful sunset tonight over the Hudson River?? WOW!!

Frank Messina. What can I say? Thank you for bringing your brilliance to us last night at Kelly's. I'm not sure if you know exactly what you did for us, but, as the owner said in his introduction, your poems help us look at the world a little differently. And your work is so funny also. The music: I've never seen such interaction before, at one point, there was so much high energy that I thought the roof was going to blow off. The music soothed my soul and the words gave me chills, made me laugh, cry, more chills, inspiring me. WOW! Thank you for your super-love energies magical ways.

Will Not Break - spokeface
You will not break me, you will not break the spirit burning bright,
tear my people from their homes and their workplace, you will not shatter cities tall and proud, make my family run underground. You will not break me.
You will not rob my leaders of their will, nor clergy of their faith,
You will not get away with this! You will not peel stripes from my flag and pierce holes through my stars,
YOU will be sorry! You will not break me, you will not break me, you will not break me!

Hey thanks for all the kudos folks. I've been getting together with some great musicians lately. The two tunes I wrote for James Cotton are "Gridlock (Leaving Town)" and "Unfinished Business". Hopefully we'll see them on his album this summer. I'll be performing at the Bob Dylan 60th B-day bash at Wetlands May 24. Also sitting in with Stir Fried on May 27 at Kelly's in Tappan, NY featuring special guests of the Grateful Dead and New Riders of Purple Sage. Expect more Octopoet gigs this summer. Have fun.

I just sent an e-mail to Frank directly, but I had to come check out the site, being a web designer and all. I like it. Additionally, since it IS a spoken word site and forum, here's my contribution;

"The milling herds of souless, popcorn-swilling couch potatoes wallow in their own filth and want a double order of fries with their Armageddon."

Admittedly, bleak. I wasn't happy that day.

Piece of my Mind - frank m.
Thanks everyone! Well, next Tuesday, December 19, begins the Octopoet series at the Nuyorican. I'm looking forward to rounding up the posse` at the Nuyo. Over the years of performing & traveling, I've met many great musicians who shared a common interest in exploring musical boundries and not afraid of taking musical risks in live performance. Whether it be back stage, at dinner, or on the street, there was some discussion about getting together, away from our respective bands, and just making some poetry and music happen. Well, that's the essence of Octopoet. Several of the musicians are in bands that require heavy tour schedules and booked weekend gigs. Hence, Tuesday night. I also wanted to round these folks up at my favorite haunt in New York City; the Nuyorican Poets Cafe. The Nuyo is my "home field" and it's for that reason I bring Octopoet to that place. It's a very special place for me. The club has been supportive of my work over the years and I've witnessed some great moments there. I also wish to turn as many people on to the club for it's warmth and overall "good vibe". You can expect some surprises at these gigs. The bill is booked as OCTOPOET: "rock stars, jazz legends & poets collide". So, expect the unexpected. Have fun and happy holidays and peace on earth always.

Report - Frank M.
Report from the front by Frank M. Well, it's great to be performing full time again after months of writing and organizing my life a bit. It was a delight to share the stage with David Amram at the Nuyorican last weekend. It's always a treat and I wish him the happiest 70th Birthday in the whole world. A big "thank-you" goes out to guitarist Phil Kramer and drummer Eamon Cronin for helping light the stage afire Saturday night. It brought chills to my neck to have Joe Isgro at stage left again. You can bet there will be more collaborating amongst the spoken motion camp. We did discuss the possibility of putting Spo-Mo together full time again. But I can't make any promises at this time. As for Octopoet, you can bet there will be some gigs lined up for December, January and Feb. Last night was "back to basics" for me. Just plain solo reading. It's where it all started for me, just bare bones. I was surprised at the great turnout in Nyack but I gotta hand it to Cherie Raglin for organizing a great monthly series at the Nyack Center. Anyhow, I'll be lurking around the NY area for Franksgiving and planning some gigs for the next few months. Anyhow, stay well and keep up the love.

Twilight - Fool #23

Into the Armenian Mountains - Bart FM Droog
One of the insane Poets from Epibreren (dichters uit Epibreren), Bart FM Droog, will leave the Kingdom of the United Netherlands on April the 30th 2000 to fly to Armenia,
a tiny country (est. pop. 3.500.000) in the Trans-Caucasian region, bordered
by Iran and Turkey.
He will perform at the Jazz Club Jerevan (May, the 4th and 5th). When he's
not performing he will try to discover more about the mythical
mountain-poets of Armenia, which are rumoured to dwell on the top of the
Armenian mountains. He will also try to discover the Armenian
poetry-organisations, which are still undiscovered by the Western World.
Since in recent years in Armenia over 1500 poets-discoverers were
slaughtered by aggressive mountain-goats and evil Armenian Orthodox
mountainmonks his collegue-Poets from Epibreren Tjitse Hofman and Jan Klug
are hoping for the best.

Coming up soon: The Poets from Epibreren-website!

Tell the folks at WBAI that when they play your music, they should give the right website address when mentioning it. Argh! Anyway, thanks for the mention of us volunteers and the benefit condert for the folks at the 9th Avenue Soup Kitchen, and a "Happy Franksgiving" to you too.

WORCESTER - Theresa
A big open "thank-you" to the poet for Saturday night at the Palladium. My first "rhythm vacuum" experience! My night seemed to keep getting better, seeing Phish, Max Creek and Frank all in one night was kewl. "Biting the Tongue" in my car CD player. For anyone interested, I host poetry readings the Worcester Library twice every month. It would be great to have Messina stop by and do a CD/booksigning gig or something. E-mail me if you like.

But look for December dates in some of the town's coolest, spoken word friendly places.---hint---hint---oh, and keep pouring those drinks, save one for Miguel Algarin.

Amsterdam - Fraank en Messina
10/12/98:Amsterdam, Netherlands, at In de Waag. Well, Reyjkavik Iceland was superb, more than I expected. The gig was quite interesting, about 150 folks, mostly high school students. The reading by Ron Whitehead and spoken word artist/punk rocker Michael Pollock was moving. I was asked to return for the Arts Festival 2,000. I'm looking forward to it. The chance to get out to the country side of Iceland was a true mind blowing experience. Geysers, immense waterfalls and volcanic craters riddle the landscape. Freezing rain one moment, than a swim into a geothermally heated lake the next. Another plantet, indeed! Glad to leave a message here in this magical city. (more to come)

on the road again... - Frank M.
Well, the Lowell Celebrates Kerouac Festival was great. It was a pleasure reading with the David Amram Quartet, meeting the Sampas family, Phil, Billy and crew. Thanks for the warm welcome, the drinks and the friendship. It was great hearing all the readers at the Sugar Shack. I gladly accept the comittee's invitation to next year's festival. Off to Reykjavik, Iceland tomorrow night, then Amsterdam and the Crossing Border Festival at The Hague and Ghent, Belgium among other places. I'll leave "notes from the road" in the forum periodically while in Europe. And thanks to Doug Brinkley for the invite to do National Public Radio's "Poetry Profiles" upon my return. Peace.

Greetings - Frank
Greetings Freaks!! Yes, I had a great time too Saturday night at the Webster Theatre. The piece I recited with Creek is called "N'Orleans". I chose that one in part because a Creek show always reminded me of the festive colors and joyous mayhem of that magical southern city. And, from the stage, the crowd appears to be a sea of slap-happy smiles and confetti. Some last minute information: Saturday, October 3, I'll be performing at the Lowell Celebrates Kerouac Festival in Lowell, MA. I'll be reading with the David Amram Quartet at the Lowell High School Auditorium on French Street. The gig is from 7-10pm and it is free! As some of you know, David Amram collaborated with Jack Kerouac in 1957 at the first jazz/poetry gigs in New York City. He wrote the film score and appeared in "Pull My Daisy". I'm honored to invited to perform at the event. It will be the last gig I do in the in the USA until I return from Europe. Next home gig will be 10/21 at the Knitting Factory in NY. Peace.
