Bone Man and Mets Poet in Memphis

Bone Man fires up the Charger
adorning horn-rimmed shades,
long white beard of angels,
heads to Memphis
to meet the Mets Poet
for Civil Rights Game 2008

Bone Man is from Kentucky,
home of Pee Wee Reese
and the Louisville Slugger,
Mets Poet is from New Jersey,
home of baseball’s birth
and Jackie’s first pro-game

Bone Man arrives at the Peabody
with five bucks in change, a fiery grin
and electricity in his boots,
Mets Poet arrives with two tickets
to the ballgame and a dream
of celebrating American hero MLK

Bone Man and Mets Poet
visit Civil Rights Museum
where so many lives changed
America changed, Boneman
still heavy-hearted with memories of ‘68
came here soon after MLK was shot

Bone Man stood in the same spot,
alone, a young man
now forty years later with the Mets Poet,
a ramshackle Lorraine Motel
turned “Grand Central Station”
of the civil rights movement

Bone Man adjusts weary eyes,
strokes long white beard of angels,
looks out from balcony
with the rain pouring down,
points crooked finger
toward the soul of America
and yells Never give up,
no matter what is going on!

Never Give Up!
